It is hard to remember what it was like before the internet. Some college students alive today actually can not remember when they weren't getting online. We are the digital generation, and even grandparents are taking advantage of internet technology. We use it for everything from keeping in touch with family and friends to researching school reports to watching TV to storing all of our photos and music. We find everything we need to live more global, well-rounded lives online, and so we need our connections to be fast. When the internet first became common in households a decade ago, dial up was the norm. Now, it is a dinosaur.
When broadband first became commercially available, it was like coming out of the dark ages. However, it was very expensive, with prices of $100 or more a month being common for the privilege of having super fast internet access. Now, prices are more reasonable, with $20 to $40 a month being the norm. However, some people want to find extremely cheap broadband that costs even less. These services do exist, but it is not likely that you've heard of them or that you will get them from your local cable company.
To get cheap dsl--the REALLY cheap kind--you will need to do some digging. Look around on the internet itself for deals. You will find some very good, small independent companies offering some very good deals. There is always a better deal on internet access out there, if you just take the time to look around.
